The Cat Empire @ The Briars, Mornington 20-Feb-2021
As one of Australia's most successful musical exports, The Cat Empire played the sold-out SummerSalt festival at The Briars in Mount Martha on Victoria's Mornington Peninsular on Saturday 20 February 2021. Formed in Melbourne during 1999, their core members are a sextet of multi-instrumentalists, namely Felix Riebl (lead vocals, percussion), Ollie McGill (piano, keyboard, recorder, tubular bells, backing vocals), Ryan Monro (double bass, bass guitar, backing vocals), Harry James Angus (trumpet, lead vocals, recorder, resonator and guitar), Will Hull-Brown (drums), and Jamshid "DJ Jumps" Khadiwhala (turntables, tambourine, clave). The Cat Empire has released eighteen singles, four live albums, and eight studio albums - two of which peaked at number one on the Australian charts, and their last five reached top five. They have played their brand of feel-good, high-energy, euphoric roots pop on the world's biggest festivals, including Bonnaroo (USA), Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada), Summersonic (Japan), plus Glastonbury Festival, Rock am Ring, Rock im Park and Edinburgh Festival (Europe). Celebrated as one of the world's best festival bands, The Cat Empire delivered another spectacular live show full of infectious, genre-embracing anthems in their fusion of jazz, ska, funk and rock with heavy Latin influences. It's no wonder Australians voted them Best Live Act of the Year in 2018 at the NLMAs. What's more, the band has been official ambassadors for Melbourne organisation Asylum Seeker Resource Centre over the last decade.
