Opeth @ 170 Russell, Melbourne 7-Feb-2017
Stockholm’s progressive heavy metal masters Opeth played Melbourne’s 170 Russell on Tuesday 7 February 2017 during the Australia & New Zealand leg of their Sorceress World Tour. Led by Mikael Åkerfeldt on vocals and guitar, the Swedish band also comprises Martín Méndez on bass, Martin "Axe" Axenrot on drums, Fredrik Åkesson on guitar, and Joakim Svalberg on keyboards. After forming in 1990, Opeth has released twelve studio albums since ‘95, three live DVDs, three live albums, and two boxsets – that have collectively sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. After playing the Sydney Opera House the night before, tonight’s atmospheric performance in front of a sold-out crowd of 900 fans also lived up to its promise of being a deeply emotional, yet exhilarating experience, and a unique concert experience by one of the best bands on the planet. Their set of 11 long songs incorporated a variety of progressive, folk, blues, classical and jazz styles, with everything from beautiful acoustic guitar passages to death metal growling.
